USR calls for a commission of inquiry into alleged illegal secret service involvement in justice and politics

Cătălin Drulă, President of USR, calls for the urgent establishment of a parliamentary commission of inquiry to prove the allegations of former CCR judges Daniel Morar and Petre Lăzăroiu regarding the illegal involvement of the secret services in the judiciary, influencing the appointments of judges to the Constitutional Court and the illegal tapping of their phones, according to a press release.

„It is incompatible with democracy for politics and justice to be controlled by the secret services and that is why we will ask for the establishment of this parliamentary commission. We ask the director of the SRI, Eduard Hellvig, to come out urgently with explanations and probably resignations are to be expected. It remains to be seen whether only the top level of the SRI was involved in these matters or also people from among those who work in the institution without being politically appointed”, said Cătălin Drulă, president of USR, adding that such an investigation is needed to restore Romanians’ trust in democracy.

„Helvig or SRI officers must be held accountable. The litmus test for PSD and PNL: are they controlled by the SRI or not?
Two former judges of the CCR publicly declare that the SRI was involved in the election of the president of the Constitutional Court. First, Daniel Morar in his book. According to Libertatea, Morar says he wanted to support Judge Petre Lăzăroiu for the CCR presidency, his competition being Livia Stanciu, who in the debate on SRI technical involvement in anti-corruption trials was of a different opinion than Morar. Lăzăroiu declined to run. That’s how Valer Dorneanu became president of the CCR. Some time later, Lăzăroiu, annoyed by Stanciu’s claims, told Morar that he didn’t run because he had been called by the top of the SRI. This is Morar’s testimony in a nutshell. Today, Libertatea returns with an article where Lăzăroiu claims the episode is true. „I knew I was not supported by the SRI”; „I have told the SRI bosses since then that they would get a terrible deal with Livia Stanciu’s candidacy”, says Lăzăroiu for Libertatea” wrote Cristian Ghinea, head of the USR’s public policy department.
