President Iohannis urges OMV management to start as soon as possible the offshore exploitation in the perimeter owned by Romgaz and OMV Petrom

President Klaus Iohannis asked OMV’s management, during his talks at the Cotroceni on Monday, to start as soon as possible the offshore exploitations in the perimeter owned by Romgaz and OMV Petrom, the Presidential Administration reports.

In the context of concerns about ensuring national energy security and efforts to adequately manage the effects of the energy crisis, the President of Romania stressed that our country’s energy potential is great, but needs to be consistently supported through investments by energy sector operators, according to the press release of the Presidential Administration.

President Klaus Iohannis also highlighted the importance that must be given to the energy transition, especially from the perspective of innovation, stressing the opportunities offered by European funds.

Romania’s President said that, given the current energy crisis and the existing risks, our country aims to use all the energy potential and all the resources at our disposal to overcome the crisis and reduce the risks in the functioning of the national energy system, the source added.

A separate topic in the discussion of the company’s investment plans was the Neptun Deep project.

President Klaus Iohannis reiterated the strategic importance of this project for Romania and asked OMV management to start offshore exploitation as soon as possible in the perimeter owned by Romgaz and OMV Petrom, given that the offshore law is favourable and in force.

OMV management presented the status of the project and the key steps achieved, committing to adopt the final investment decision in mid-2023, so that the exploitation of natural gas from the Neptun Deep perimeter can start as soon as possible.

Further discussions covered a number of issues on regional energy developments in the light of the impact of the energy crisis on the economy in general, but also on the business environment and the population.

The President stressed the need for appropriate measures to reduce inequalities and ensure the support that household consumers need, but also for the economy as a whole, in order to maintain competitiveness in industry and other sectors.

In the context of discussions on regional developments, OMV Petrom’s intention to develop large-scale projects in the Republic of Moldova was discussed, an initiative welcomed by President Klaus Iohannis, who said that Romania is willing to provide all necessary support to ensure an adequate level of energy security in the neighboring country, the source added.
