EXCLUSIVE POLL Massive vote for Romania to stay in the European Union / Only 13% of Romanians say they would vote to leave the EU if a referendum were held next Sunday

70% of Romanians would vote for Romania to remain in the European Union if a referendum were held next Sunday, only 13% would vote for leaving and 12% say they are undecided, according to a survey conducted by Avangarde on behalf of G4Media.ro. The poll also shows that EU leaders are not trusted by Romanians. The sociological survey was conducted a few weeks after the last Eurobarometer, which showed a collapse in Romanians’ trust in the EU.

When asked „Do you think Romania would develop better in the future as part of the EU or outside it?”, 69% say Romania would develop better as part of the EU and only 13% outside it.

60% of respondents say they have a rather good opinion of the European Union, 8% a very good opinion, 19% a rather bad opinion and 2% a very bad opinion.

G4Media.ro wrote on 10 March that only 46% of Romanians today believe that Romania’s membership of the European Union is a good thing, compared to the European average of 62%, according to the ninth edition of the European Parliament’s Eurobarometer, Sociodemographic Trends 2007 – 2022. According to the survey, in 2015 the number of Romanians who said EU membership was a good thing was much higher, at 68%, compared to the EU average at the time of 54%.

The figure shows that Romanians’ confidence in the EU plummeted with the onset of the pandemic when Brussels introduced strict travel rules conditional on the vaccine. According to the survey, in 2020 they were still in the European average when asked if EU membership was a good thing (55% Romania, 59% European average) but since then the gap has steadily widened: while at the European level trust in the EU has grown, in Romania it has steadily collapsed.
