Protest planned for Saturday in front of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in solidarity with journalist Emilia Șercan/ Protesters will demand the resignations of Prime Minister Ciucă, Minister Bode and the head of the Romanian Police

A protest is announced for Saturday that is to take place in front of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Revolution Square) in solidarity with journalist Emilia Șercan, who has accused a campaign of intimidation and harassment after she published her investigation into Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă’s PhD thesis, which she claims is plagiarised.

The journalist denounced on Monday an attempt to compromise her and accused the police of leaking to a website a piece of evidence she had submitted in the case of threats she received after publishing her investigation.

Several associations and organisations announce that they will show their solidarity with Emilia Șercan on Saturday, starting at 17:00, in front of the Ministry of Interior, where they will demand the resignations of Nicolae Ciucă, Minister Lucian Bode and the head of the Romanian Police, Benone-Marian Matei.

„The three have ignored the recent campaign of intimidation and public smear of journalist Emilia Șercan and, more seriously, the leak of evidence from an ongoing criminal investigation within the Romanian Police. They have thus given a signal that institutions called upon to defend the interests of the citizen are turning against him without being promptly sanctioned. We believe that the journalist’s safety is at risk, as is the freedom of expression of the press and of any critical voice in our country,” reads the protest manifesto, announced on Facebook.
