Municipal councilors approved at Monday’s meeting a resolution aimed at initiating steps to conclude a sister city agreement between Bucharest and Kiev, Agerpres reports.

Liberal city councilor Razvan Socolovici highlighted the „heroism” and „courage” of Ukrainians in Kyiv, as well as the involvement of the civilian population and local leaders in defending the city.

” The PNL, through its general councilors, is proposing a sister city project between Bucharest and a hero city, Kyiv. We, the citizens of Bucharest, know what it means to fight for freedom. We know that both Ukraine and Kyiv will resist and we will build our European future together,” he said.

Socolovici said that the PNL group calls on the mayor general to take the necessary steps to repeal the decision approving the sister city agreement between Bucharest and Moscow.

„We cannot be associated with a capital of a terrorist state, an aggressor state, a state that does not respect international law,” he argued.

The decision approved on Monday covers cooperation in the fields of administration, economy, trade, healthcare, education, culture, tourism and the environment.

„The desire of the Municipality of Bucharest to develop friendly relations with the city of Kyiv has led to the consideration of the possibility of concluding a Sister City Agreement between the two capitals at a later stage, in accordance with the related provisions and procedures in force. The conclusion of the Agreement would have beneficial effects for all involved and would consist of exchanges of information and experience, as well as cooperation in areas such as the development of economic and cultural relations, sports, education, environmental protection, and other mutually agreed areas,” the expert report reads.
