George Maior promises „detailed explanations” in the Giuliani’s letter scandal: „All official positions of the US representatives were contrary to the spirit of the messages in the letter”

George Maior reacted Monday after the Foreign Affairs Ministry leadership summoned him for explanation in the scandal of Rudolph Giuliani’s letter, which the US Ambassador had earlier said was the fruit of lobbying bypersons that have had problems with the law. Maior has promised to provide the Foreign Ministry with „detailed information”.

„I mention that the American citizen mentioned is a private person who has no official capacity in the American state,” says Maior in a statement submitted to G4Media.

„Under the circumstances where all official positions publicly expressed by United States representatives in recent years, including this year, were contrary to the spirit and meaning of the messages in the letter attributed to Mr. Rudolph Giuliani, I considered, in good faith, that it is my duty as an ambassador of Romania, to defend our country’s reputation against incorrect points of view, „Maior said.

I have taken note of the press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on my call to explain the reaction I had following the appearance in the public space of a letter attributed to a private person in the United States of America. In this regard, I would like to make the following points:

1. I will answer with interest and opening to the call of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where I will provide in detail all the explanations I will be asked for.
2. As regards my comment on a letter attributed to Rudolph Giuliani, I note that the American citizen mentioned is a private person who has no official capacity in the United States.
3. While all the official positions publicly expressed by US representatives in recent years, including this year, were contrary to the spirit and meaning of the messages in the letter attributed to Mr. Rudolph Giuliani, I considered, in good faith, that it is of my duty, as an ambassador of Romania, to defend our country’s reputation against incorrect views.
4. Regarding the hypothesis of affecting the bilateral relations with the United States of America, for a correct understanding of the substance of the excellent relations with the US that we have built over time for Romania’s benefit, I make available to the public the letter I received last year from current State Secretary Mike Pompeo, former CIA director, in which the US official mentioned, among other things, the following: the outstanding partnership with the United States and exceptional leadership during my tenure as Director of the Romanian Internal Intelligence Service; that I had a profound and positive impact on SRI, the fact that I have been instrumental in developing the relationship between the Romanian and American services that continues to exist today; the fact that during my tenure as a director SRI has become one of the most professional, modern and efficient European information services.
