Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki after meeting with Nicolae Ciucă: „We stand with Romania in its ambition to join the Schengen area, Europe needs strong economies that are energy independent from Russia”

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, after meeting Nicolae Ciucă, said that his country is supporting Romania in its ambition to join the Schengen area. Europe needs strong economies, energy independent from Russia, we must strengthen our eastern flank to strengthen our sovereignty, the Polish official said.

„Our countries have changed a lot in the last 20, 30 years after gaining freedom, but one thing has not changed, our security conditions have not changed, and they are directly dependent on how Russia acts. Whether it is an aggressor country, as it is now, a country that invades a neighbor, or whether it is a country with which one can coexist in peace. Poland and Romania are doing everything possible to ensure that this is the case, that we can coexist in peace,” said the Polish Prime Minister.

He added that most of the time in discussions with Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă was devoted to the situation in Ukraine and the direct threats arising from it.

„In order to counter these threats, we are striving to bring all our diplomatic, political and security actions into line”, said the head of the Polish executive, pointing out that EU member states must draw up a bold package of sanctions against the Russian Federation that would seriously affect the Russian economy.

The Polish Prime Minister also said that both he and the Romanian Prime Minister agreed that „there must be sanctions for the entire banking system in Russia because only this can lead to a profound change in Russian policy, which today is characterized by one thing, aggression”.

„We stand with Romania in its ambition to join the Schengen area, Europe needs strong economies, energy independent from Russia and this is the key to our discussions and the main purpose of this visit,” Morawiecki said, adding that „hard times are ahead of us”.

He noted that he had said on several occasions that not only gas will come through Nord Stream II and Nord Stream I. „Today we see that the blood of innocent people is flowing through these pipelines,” the Polish Prime Minister said, noting that „our partners must stop financing the Russian war machine”.
